San Juan County High Point Trip Report
Mount Constitution (2,407 ft)
Date: June 28, 2003
Author: Ken Russell
Luck must have been with me this day as I headed for John Roper's correctly labeled, Most magnificent
marine view in the US. We arrived at the Anacortes ferry dock without checking the schedule and were
told to hurry aboard as the boat was ready to leave for Orcas Island. No waiting! After the scenic cross
island drive, we arrived at the summit parking lot and walked to the lookout tower. The weather was warm
and sunny with views from Vancouver, BC to Everett, WA and west to Port Angeles, WA. Easily visible
this day were some of the other Washington County highpoints including: Mount Baker, Whatcom County;
Glacier Peak, Snohomish County; Mount Rainier, Pierce County; Grey Wolf, Clallam County. Along with
visitors from several countries, we identified the places we could see and soaked in the magnificence.
Leaving the mountain, we toured aimlessly around the island. Arriving back at the ferry ticket booth,
without checking the schedule again, I asked when the next boat left for Anacortes. Hurry, she said,
They may be leaving as we speak. No waiting again!!
I only regret we didn't have time for dinner at Rosario Resort.
Perhaps another time. This is a highpoint worth doing repeatedly.
