Florence County High Point Trip Report
Date: June 20, 2002
Author: Roy Schweiker
Used an approach from the west rather than Jobe Wymore's and Wendy Hecht's east approach, using the
new map of the Nicolet National Forest. Go north on Daumitz Road (FR2152) from its junction with
FR2452/Wisconsin Creek Road (mile 4.2 of Jobe's report although I came in the other way). After about
2.5 miles turn right on FR2447 which is rough enough that you probably want to walk it without high clearance
(there is also a logging operation in progress). After about 1.6 miles there is a small clearing and
beyond the road is worse yet although it is still used as a snowmobile trail. The road climbs a little more and
is flat for a while before descending.
I wandered around on both sides of the road and found no obvious highest point or the BM.
Summit allegedly has BM LEROY, PID QM0644 at NAD 83 45-59-58 088-32-32. I didn't find it but I don't have a
GPS and they haven't seen it since 1954 either. In addition to the seasonal ticks, mosquitoes, black flies,
and deer flies, there is an infestation of gypsy moth caterpillars so this is a good one for insect lovers.
Note that the Brule River bridge on Daumitz Road is missing so you can't come or go that way.
