Iowa County High Point Trip Report
West Blue Mound
Date: September 10, 2000
Author: Travis Tennessen
I visited this highpoint on a foggy Sunday morning in September. I have been to this highpoint before to
climb the two towers on the summit but since I have just become interested in county highpointing I
decided to officially start with my home county highpoint. The summit is West Blue Mound which is
located in Blue Mounds State Park and is just above the village of Blue Mounds, located roughly 20 miles
west of Madison on Highway 151. This mound is the highest point in southern Wisconsin as well as the
Iowa county highpoint.
Access to the summit is by road and directed by signs for Blue Mound State Park from the village of Blue
Mound. You must enter the state park fee area to access the highpoint. At the summit there is a large
circle drive with an observation tower on each end. I estimated that the actual highpoint is located in the
picnic area in the middle of the drive. It is difficult to locate the exact point.
