I saw from reports that nobody could find the benchmark by the tower.

I visited the tower two weeks ago and found the benchmark (or at least what I think is the BM). I found a broken concrete monument, a portion protruding about 2-3 inches above ground, directly under the apparent center of the tower. I dug around it and found that this is an 8-inch square concrete marker with the top broken off. I have no doubt that vandals were interested in the brass cap and worked for a while to bust it out of the concrete.

Being a land surveyor for 35 years, I've seen many broken bench marks and section corner markers and I truly believe that what I found is the original benchmark at this lookout tower.
