Fayette County High Point Trip Report
Myles Knob (3,460+ ft)
Date: June 9, 1999
Author: Fred Lobdell
Myles Knob lies near the eastern edge of Fayette County and a short distance north of US 60.
It is home to a radio tower and two FAA facilities.
From the Fayette/Greenbrier county line on US 60, go west on 60 for about 2 miles.
(Big Sewell Church will be at 1.8 miles on the left [south]).
Here county road 60/17 (Cavendish Rd.; it is not shown on the topographic map)
goes off to the right (north).
Take this road and after only 0.1 miles, at the top of the hill, turn right (east)
onto a dirt road. (There was a large building, now destroyed by fire, at this intersection.
It may appear that the road is just a bare area by the foundation, but it does go past
and continues east.) Follow this road for a couple of hundred yards or so until you reach
a locked gate. There is room to park by the fence without blocking the gate.
The land is not posted.
Walk up the road. The first structure you pass is a radio tower on the right.
Next is a small FAA relay tower on the left. Behind this tower, on the edge of the woods,
are a number of large sandstone boulders. The highest of these may (or may not) be
the high point.
Continue up the road across a large open grassy field to the third structure,
one of those weirdly shaped FAA things.
This is surrounded by a wooden fence that may be good enough to keep cattle out,
but is totally inadequate to keep people out. The road appears to pass over a slight rise
shortly before reaching this last structure; this is the other candidate for the high point.
