Grant County Highpoint Trip Report

It appears the West Virginia Department of Transportation amuses itself by
frequently changing the numbers of its roads. The directions of both Fred
Lobdell and Ryan Richardson are thus both now out of date.
point on Cabin Mtn
From Harman, head north on WV 32 about 4.4 miles to Bonner Mountain Road (County
Road XX). Take this to a dead end after about 5 miles. Turn right here onto
Laneville Road. Take this road for about 1.4 miles, where it turns to gravel
and becomes FR 19. Follow this for roughly ten miles, entering the Dolly Sods
wilderness. As I was there over Memorial Day weekend, parking was very
difficult to come by and I parked at the Bear Rocks area, north of where Don
Desrosiers did in his report. A map is helpful here but you can follow his and
Mike Schwartz's excellent reports and they'll get you there. The small cairn is
still evident and there are nice views of the area. Round trip from the parking
area was 7.7 miles with about 450 feet of elevation gain, taking me 2 hours and
40 minutes.
Bell Knob
I headed back south on FR 19 about five miles (don't have the exact distance)
to a gated gravel road on the east side of FR 19
(WGS84 coordinates (38.99541° N, 79.32863° W)).
A quick 0.5 mile hike gets you to the summit. I camped near the
summit here with my dog, a great spot.
