Lewis County High Point Trip Report
one area 1.33 miles northwest of Cleveland (1,960+ ft)
Date: August 20, 2001

I did this one by a two hour hike, only to discover a new road, not shown on topo or Delorme, on the way
back that turns this into a near drive-up. At the hamlet of Cleveland, 0.3 miles south of the Upshur/Webster
County line on WV 20, there is a sign for CR 50/6, Flat Run Road. This descends to a stream ford, beyond
which the dirt road parallels the river west of Cleveland before turning north at the second "ford" shown on
the topo.
The better way to do this high point is to take CR 20/48, Warden Road, a good gravel road, west from WV
20, less than 1/10 mile uphill (north) of Upshur/Webster line. Since I did not go back to drive the road, I
have no mileage data. After a half mile or so, the old dirt road from Cleveland joins the better road from the
lower left, and then road follows the route shown on the topo. After turning north about 1/2 mile west of
Cleveland, follow the dirt road along Flat run, passing the now abandoned house shown on the map, the fork
at spot elevation 1480, and the left fork at the only occupied house along Flat Run, a real Tobacco Road special.
The road then climbs steeply, switchbacks sharply left, and reaches the pipeline right-of-way shown
at the crest, about 1/4 mile NE of the high point.
Hike the right-of-way directly to the summit, maybe ten minutes total. The last stretch of road is steep, but I
think a passenger car could make it to the crest.
