Monongalia County High Point Trip Report
on county line 600 ft west of Sand Spring Lookout Tower (2560+ ft)

Take exit 15, Coopers Rock, north off I-68. Follow signs for Chestnut Ridge Park.
After 2 miles, pass the park entrance on the left and continue straight ahead.
Pavement ends at 2.8 miles. Continue on excellent gravel road to summit road turn off
at 3.7 miles. The county line cuts just above the lower end of the summit road.
At the summit, the bench mark is easy to find.
Alt route: On WV 857 southbound, 0.7 miles south of the PA/WV line, turn left onto
Sand Spring Road. Passenger cars can travel a few hundred yards after the road turns to dirt,
leaving about a 2 1/2 mile hike to the summit up a high-clearance or jeep road.
The road improves dramatically about 1/2 mile before the summit.
Note: Monongalia is a local variant of Monongahela, apparently of considerable longevity.
