Summers County High Point Trip Report
Keeney Knob (3,927 ft)

Unfortunately, I was unable to do this high point. According to the DeLorme atlas, county road 7/17 is
supposed to go to the summit. I spent the best part of two hours driving on county road 7. This is a one-
lane road with, in places, graveled shoulders and having two-way traffic. It was a bit unsettling to find
some of the locals coming around a blind curve at 40 mph, but I was fortunate in having a shoulder to
retreat to whenever I encountered competition for road space.
Anyway, most of the intersecting county roads are well marked, but 7/17 wasn't. I found what I think is
the road, but it forked about a half mile up. The left fork had had a bunch of gravel dumped on it but not
spread out, and beyond that point it looked like soft dirt. In any event, it was beyond the capabilities of
my car. The right fork continued another half mile to a couple of houses. Beyond that a rough and rocky
dirt road appeared to continue; perhaps this is the road to the summit. Again, my car wouldn't do it, and
it would be a long walk from this point.
An alternative approach might be to take county road 3/23 to within a short distance north of the summit
and bushwhack from there, but I lacked the time and inclination to try this. I would be interested in
hearing of others' experiences in trying this one.
